The Urban Institute attended the inaugural meeting of the Global Urban Network hosted by the School of Cities at the University of Toronto in October 2019.

The workshop was supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and together 25 urban institutes from across five continents.  The purpose of the workshop was to explore the potential for meaningful collaboration between institutes across their diverse research, education and community engagement initiatives.

Simon Marvin Director of the Urban Institute said “UI already has many strong bilateral collaborations and effective multi-lateral research networks but we recognise there could be significant added value and potential in a single inclusive network.  There are significant opportunities for sharing expertise and knowledge, extending research agendas, identifying critical research gaps and mutual learning across contexts”.

The next meeting of the Network will be at the World Urban Forum in spring 2020 with the intention of the moving towards a stronger network, and identifying a programme of activities for the next three years. The UI and the urban community at Sheffield look forward to the new collaborative opportunities for taking forward our research interests.
